Introduction

Abelia is a charming, semi-evergreen shrub prized for its long bloom time, fragrant flowers, and striking foliage. It’s ideal for adding texture and color to mixed borders, hedges, or as a foundation plant in your garden. Abelia’s versatility and low-maintenance nature make it a great option for gardeners of all skill levels.

Planting

Abelia prefers well-drained soil and should be planted in a sunny or partially shaded location. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and place the plant at the same depth it was growing in the container. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

Popular Species / Types

A few of the most popular species and varieties include:
  • Abelia x grandiflora (Glossy Abelia)
  • Abelia mosanensis (Mosan Abelia)
  • Abelia chinensis (Chinese Abelia)
  • Abelia schumannii (Schumann's Abelia)
Watering
Water abelia consistently during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it can tolerate occasional drought but should be watered during prolonged dry periods.
Fertilizing
Feed abelia in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering throughout the growing season.
Pruning
Prune abelia lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain its shape. For a fuller appearance, trim back long stems to encourage bushier growth.
