Welcome to
Art's Nursery!

We all want to surround ourselves with plants. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beautiful garden full of flowers, shrubs and trees, a little patio with gorgeous pottery and plants, a home full of lush tropical foliage or sensational succulents, a little plant for the office or anything else.

Like you, we believe that plants should be part of our lives. But getting started can be challenging

Choosing The Best Plants Can Be Tough!

Picking the best plants for your garden, home or patio can be tough, time consuming and expensive.

Choosing the right plants in a sea of green with only tiny plant tags to help you pick can be frustrating. Who has time to figure out plant names written in some dead language anyways?

Trying to find someone that knows something in most other stores or online sites can be a waste of time.

You've Got Questions!

Where do I start?

Which plants are best? How many do I need? What does this one look like? How big does it get? Where do I plant it? How come this planting stuff is so heavy and tiring? What kind of dirt do I need? Does it need food? How do I take care of it? Do I really have to water it? What do I do if it gets sick or dies?

Did I just waste my time and hard-earned money?

Am I failure if my plant turns into mushy compost?

Doing nothing isn’t an option either – unless you want to be ‘that house on the block’ that children scurry past. Yes, you know the one … the one that neighbors glance at sideways and speak of in only hushed tones.

Hanging Baskets for Beginners

Hanging Baskets for Beginners

Let's build a hanging basket together. Start by assembling your ingredients. I filled my hanging basket with some Pro MixSoil or any good rich potting soil. You fill it right to the top because the soil tends to settle. The theme I'm going with are purples, greens and whites. To start with, I've got a beautiful Surprise Sparkle Blue Petunia, I love the speckled center. I like to plant my centers first. This lovely petunia is going to cascade out. I gently tease apart the roots. I'm settling my petunia in. I'm planting my hanging basket quite full.

Next I'm going to plant some of my trailers. This is a purple flowering bacopa. It says blue, but it's picking up purple quite nicely. I tuck it into the side. I'm going to alternate the bacopa with my variegated ground ivy which makes a great trailer. It'll probably even reach the ground. If you have a greenhouse and you can heat it, you can start earlier with smaller plants, but I don't have a greenhouse. I'm just going to start this on my deck.

I'm planting it heavy and I'm not evenly spacing. When I hang this, I have a front side and a back side. That's how I'm planting for me. If your hanging basket is hanging in the center of your patio, you're going to evenly space all your seedlings. So think about what side you're going to be looking at the most. I'm also probably over planting like I usually do!

Next I’ll plant the heliotrope. It has a beautiful fragrance to it. I always like plants that have some fragrance. I'm tucking these in and these are just going to cascade along the back. Just very
carefully digging it in. I’m to make a little bit of a mess, but that's okay!!

And finally, I'm sticking in my final little heliotrope at the back. This planter is going to be fragrant and it's going to be purples, greens and whites, soft and dark purples. If you need any more soil, you can just tuck the soil in but I think I've got lots in here. Give it a little jiggle.

Once you've watered you can fertilize with a liquid fertilizer. I like to use liquid fertilizer once a week or you can use a diluted version every second watering. There's also granular slow-release fertilizer if that's what you prefer and then hang it on your deck. Keep it covered. And a little bit sheltered until nighttime temperatures get to be above 10 degrees Celsius and then it's ready to go for sun.

There are lots of planters available from these cute little burlap and coconut fiber ones to the rod iron to the lighter plastic ones. If you don't have any spot to hang your hanging basket on, we have these Shepherds hooks, which are my favourite because I like to hang my hanging baskets quite low because I love of to look at what I have in the top of them. We also have brackets available and S hooks right over here. Brackets you can actually screw into the wall. If you have a hook that is quite high you can actually drop your hanging basket low with this so that you can enjoy it.

We've got lots of plants to choose from, our selection is always changing. We're getting deliveries every week. So come and take a look and find something that appeals to you.
