Named after a Spanish Explorer, Antonio Escallon, Escallonia are ofted found on hillsides and exposed coasts. As a result, these evergreen shrubs prefer similar environments in the garden. Glossy green foliage is accented by free-flowering, predominantly pink, sometimes white or red flowers.
They are extremely well suited for exposed coastal gardens as windbreaks and hedges. They are generally lime-tolerant and drought resistant, thriving in almost any soil as long as it is well drained and the location is sunny. Pruning, if required, should be carried out after flowering.
