Daphne are a large group of semi-evergreen to evergreen shrubs grown for their handsome foliage and small, yet extremely fragrant flowers. Flower colours are typically, white pink or occasionally nearly red.
They can be a tough plant to grow, but the rewards are well worth it.
Daphnes prefer a cool, moistm humus-rich, somewhat acidic soil that is well drained. If Camellias and Rhododendrons do well in your garden, so should Daphnes. Being shallow rooted, these plants resent disturbance. Use a mulch to suppress weeds instead of manual methods. Small leaved Daphnes prefer full sun, while larger leaved types do better with a little more shade.
