Arbutus plants, or Madrones, can be either shrubs or trees depending on the type.
Arbutus menziesii is the native Arbutus in B.C and can be found in souther coastal locations like the Gulf Islands. It is a magnificent, yet slow growing evergreen tree with striking peeling bark.
Arbutus unedo is a shorter, smaller cousing can is a wonderful evergreen shrub or small tree for west coast gardens. It is also known as the Strawberry Tree mostly for its rounded, colourful, strawberry-like ornamental fruits.
In general, Arbutus plants require full sun and extremely well draining, poor to average soils. They dislike transplantation and can be fussy if unhappy in their location. However, the extra work required is well worth the effort!
