Plant peach & nectarine trees in full sun, in moist, well drained soils. Avoid low-lying frost pockets or wet areas with poor drainage. A pollinator is not required to produce fruit – a single mature tree will deliver a large tasty crop. Fruit thinning is recommended for best quality. Pick fruit when it is soft to the touch and pulls away from the tree easily. Never prune in winter as this can cause disease. Prune when the tree is actively growing from February through the summer. Peaches produce fruit on last year’s growth so strive to constantly renew the young shoots. Spray dormant oil and lime sulphur combination to kill over wintering insects in late winter or early spring. Apply a fruit tree and berry fertilizer in early spring as growth begins. Apply a copper spray in late winter to minimize the chance of peach leaf curl – a fairly common issue affecting peach trees.
