How To Grow Zebra Plant
Aphelandra squarrosa
Originally from southern Brazil, the Zebra is truly a jungle plant. It likes the warm, humid conditions and filtered sunlight of the amazon. Unique dark leaves and striped with white veins. Colourful flowers are a beautiful accent.
LIGHT
This jungle plant thrives in indirect light or partial shade. Its used to growing under the foliage of the tropical jungle. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch. Complete shade may cause a lack of flowers.
WATER
Zebra plants prefer consistently wet, moist soil. Over watering may cause the leaves to wilt. Water to saturation every couple of weeks. Luke warm water is recommended to mimic the effect of tropical rainstorms. High humidity is a requirement, 60-70% is recommended.
SOIL
Grows best in neutral to acidic soils. A multi-purpose potting soil like Pro-Mix Tropical Blend will work well. Incorporate some sand into the mix to ensure good drainage.
CARE
Grows best in 60F+ temperatures. Never allow the temperature to go below 55F. Avoid temperature fluctuations. Fertilize in spring and summer every 1-2 weeks with a ½ strength liquid feed. Plant sap is an irritant. Wear gloves when pruning.
