How To Grow Orchids
Phalaenopsis
Several flat petalled flowers blooming along an arching stem is the hallmark of these Orchids. One of the easiest to grow.
LIGHT
Phalaenopsis like bright, indirect light near a window, but will also do well under artificial light. Of the Orchids, they are considered to be “low light” varieties. Leaves should be olive green. Dark green indicates not enough light, red tinged leaves, too much light.
WATER
Watering depends on the soil medium. When planted in bark, once a week is generally enough. In summer, water slightly more often and in winter, less. Its best to water in the morning with tepid water. To prevent rot, avoid having standing water near the crown.
SOIL
An orchid or mostly bark mix is recommended.
CARE
Although they have a reputation for being difficult, growing Orchids is just like other houseplants. They like periodic water, indirect light and a well draining, mostly bark, growing medium. Fluctuating temperatures can cause bud drop. Fertilize with an orchid fertilizer weekly at half strength. Once a month, flush with tepid water to avoid salt build-up. Cut away spent flower stocks at the base to promote future blooms.
