How To Grow Christmas Cactus
Schlumbergera bridgesii
With parents originally from Brazil, this plant is actually a hybrid of two different Epiphyte species from the South American rainforests. Dark green flattened stems that appear in segments lead to flowers that bloom from the tips.
LIGHT
Bright, indirect light is recommended for this plant.
WATER
Keep the soil moist, but not soggy while plant is growing. After flowering, water sparingly until new growth begins in spring. Shriveled, limp stems indicate dryness. An average 50% humidity is recommended.
SOIL
Well-drained potting medium is essential. If you are mixing your own, use 1 part potting mix and 1 part fir bark.
CARE
After flowering, give it a one month rest by watering sparingly and halting fertilization until new growth begins. Regular pruning will encourage branching. Feed every 2 weeks with a 1/2 strength fertilizer. For holiday blooms, it needs shorter, cooler days and nights as well as barely moist soil. Once budding, do not move it as changes in light and temperature can cause it to drop buds and flowers. Keep away from drafty areas and heat vents.
