How To Grow Bromeliads
Bromeliad
Bromeliads are a diverse group of indoor tropicals with only a few needs and few problems.
LIGHT
Bromeliads thrive in brightly lit spaces, but not direct sun. Exposure to direct sunlight for an extended period of time can cause damage to the leaves.
WATER
These plants are adapted to withstand drought, but dislike being over-watered. Water thouroughly but make sure the water escapes from its drainage holes otherwise root rot may occur. Don’t water again until the top 2 inches are dry. Never water using a metal container.
SOIL
A fast-draining medium like bark is best. Do not use regular potting soil as it is too dense and will not allow for the fast drainage these plants need.
CARE
High humidity is required to grow indoors. Use a sprayer to mist the plant and/or create a tray of water and pebbles and set your plant on or near it. Little fertilizer is required. Use a 1/2 strength liquid fertilizer occasionally. Too much fertilizer can cause leaves to become leggy and colours to diminish. The brightly coloured centers are not the flower. Once a bromeliad truly flowers, it will often develop offsets or pups before it perishes.
