How To Grow Boston Ferns
Nephrolepsis exaltata
The Boston Fern has been popular since Victorian times as its long, arching fronds form a lush, attractive houseplant. Leaflets called Pinae form on fronds. It is an excellent plant for displaying in hanging baskets or on pedestals. Originally from Central America.
LIGHT
Moderate to bright light is recommended, but no direct sun. Give the plant a quarter turn occasionally to expose all sides to light.
WATER
Keep soil constantly moist, but not soggy. Keep an eye on larger plants as they can dry out rapidly. High humidity is preferred. Misting can be beneficial. Yellow, wilted fronds may indicate over watering.
SOIL
For best results, use a peat moss-based potting mix, such as African violet potting mix. Alternately use a 50-50 mixture of peat moss and all-purpose potting mix.
CARE
A rainforest native, care is easy as long as you can provide high humidity. Browning leaves may indicate dryness. Repot in spring when roots have filled the container. For best results, increase pot size in small increments. Feed every 2 weeks with a liquid fertilizer at half strength. Scale and spider mites may bother this fern. Remove by hand or spray with water. Don’t use insecticides on ferns as leaf damage.
