How To Grow Anthurium
Anthurium andraeanum
Originally from Columbia, one of the best known tropical houseplants. It is especially colourful from Spring through Fall when its glossy red, heart shaped flowers and spadix appear. Long leathery green leaves are held on upright stems.
LIGHT
Anthuriums prefer at least 4 hours of indirect light per day. Avoid direct sun.
WATER
Keep soil evenly moist in Spring through Fall and slightly drier during the winter months. Yellow leaves are often cause by over-watering. Water deeply, but don’t allow the soil to get boggy. 50% or higher humidity is recommended.
SOIL
A peat moss based potting mix is recommended.
CARE
Anthurium leaves are poisonous. They contain calcium oxalate crystals that cause severe burning in the mouth. Keep the plant away from children or pets. Feed every two weeks in spring and summer with a 1/2 strength high phosphorus fertilizer. Brown leaf tips may be a sign of dry air. Plant it high so than the crown sits above the surrounding soil. Keep its glossy green leaves clean by wiping with damp cloth.
