How To Grow Amaryllis
Hippeastrum
These giant winter blooming houseplants are originally from South Africa. Large strap-like leaves, long tall flower stems produce huge flowers in shades of red, white, pink and green.
LIGHT
Amaryllis bulbs need full sun to part shade. A bright, but indirect light indoors is ideal. Morning sun with some shade in the afternoon is ideal.
WATER
Once planted, wait to water your plant until you see a couple of inches of new growth. Water your amaryllis when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.
After blooming, avoid watering as it needs a reset before it continues to grow.
SOIL
Use Pro-Mix or similar potting soils when planting your Amaryllis. Make sure the top 1/3 of the bulb is above the soil level. A larger, wider pot is preferable as the plant can become top heavy. Turn the pot occasionally to keep the flower stems growing straight.
CARE
Planting time is everything. Plant your Amaryllis 10-12 weeks before you want it to bloom! Warm temperatures are a requirement. Feed your amaryllis with a ½ strength liquid fertilizer before the holidays every 2-3 weeks. Spider mites and mealy bugs are a common problem. Treat with an insecticidal soap. A failure to bloom could indicate a lack of light.
