How do I grow water lilies?

Water lilies are easy to grow. They need full sun, that is 6-8 hours of bright sunlight per day, rich soil, and warm, shallow, static water. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and types. There are both tropical water lilies and hardy lilies. This information pertains mostly to hardy varieties. Plant your water lilies in large container with holes and cover the top of the soil with rock. This keeps the soil in the pot when it is submerged in water. In your pond, the pot should be fully submerged. As the water lily grows, it will stretch to form lily pads and once warm enough, beautiful flowers in shades of white, pink, red or yellow depending on the variety. Water lily flowers upen during sunlight hours and close for the evening.

Water lilies are heavy feeders. Provide a dose of fertilizer once per month during late spring and summer. This is usually an aquatic pellet/spike that you can insert into the soil.
