Yes. Applying a layer of mulch around a planting is a good idea. Mulch serves to reduce the number of weeds, preserve moisture, moderate root temperature and makes the garden look more finished and attractive.
There are many kinds of mulch including organic ones like aged mulch, wood chips etc as well as in-organic ones like stones and river rock. We generally recommend an application of 2-3 inched thick.
