Easy Planting Guide for Garlic

  1. Choose the Right Time: Plant garlic in the fall, about 4-6 weeks before the first frost date in your area. This gives the bulbs time to establish roots before winter.

  2. Select a Sunny Location: Garlic thrives in full sun, so pick a spot in your garden that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

  3. Prepare the Soil: Garlic prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 12 inches and mix in compost or well-rotted manure.

  4. Planting the Cloves:

    • Separate the garlic bulbs into individual cloves, leaving the papery skin on each clove.
    • Plant each clove about 2 inches deep, with the pointed end facing up.
    • Space the cloves 4-6 inches apart in rows that are 12-18 inches apart.
  5. Watering: Water the garlic well after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged throughout the growing season.

  6. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the garlic from extreme temperatures.

  7. Harvesting: Garlic is usually ready to harvest in mid-summer when the leaves start to turn yellow and die back. Carefully lift the bulbs with a garden fork and allow them to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for a few weeks.

Enjoy the satisfaction of growing your own garlic and savor the fresh, robust flavors in your culinary creations!
