Perennials for Hot and Dry Locations

Planting the right plant in the right place is an essential part of achieving gardening success. This collection of perennials, plants that come back year after year, are ideal candidates for plants that are well suited to sunny, hot and dry locations. This is not to say that they don't need the occasional watering, they are just well suited to drier locations. These and similar varieties are generally available at Art's Nursery, but call ahead to confirm stock levels.

Sedum
Stonecrop

An often underused perennial group, Sedums are available in a variety of colours as well as upright or spreading varieties. Flowers appear in late summer in shades of white, yellow, pink or near red depending on the variety. Tough and dependable.

Lavandula
Lavender

Lavender is one of the perennial favourites for the hot sunny garden. Fragrant foliage and flowers. Needs well drained soils and full sun for best growth.

Echinacea
Coneflower

Echinaceas or Coneflowers are a standard for any summer garden or perennial border. Many different colours as well as single and double flowering varieties are available. Prefers full sun and well drained soils.

Eryngium
Sea Holly

Eryngium, or Sea Holly as it is more commonly known is an underused perennial with striking metallic gray to blue spiky flowers. Blue-green toothed flowers provide additional interest. Great for coastal locations too!

Red Hot Poker Plant

Russian Sage
