Lilies come in several different types, each with its own flower shape, fragrance, height, bloom time, and garden use. Asiatic lilies are among the easiest and earliest to bloom, usually flowering in early to midsummer. They produce upright or outward-facing flowers in bright colours such as yellow, orange, red, pink, white, and bicolours. Asiatic lilies are generally not fragrant, but they are very reliable, cold hardy, and excellent for adding bold colour to garden beds and containers.
Oriental lilies usually bloom later in summer and are best known for their large, dramatic flowers and strong fragrance. They often feature elegant shades of white, pink, rose, and burgundy, sometimes with speckles or contrasting throats. Compared with Asiatic lilies, Oriental lilies tend to have a more luxurious look and scent, making them especially popular near patios, walkways, and as cut flowers. They generally prefer rich, well-drained soil and appreciate consistent moisture during the growing season.
Martagon lilies have a more natural, woodland style and are quite different from the bold, upright look of Asiatic and Oriental types. They produce tall stems with many smaller, downward-facing flowers with recurved petals, often described as “Turk’s cap” blooms. Martagon lilies are excellent for partial shade and naturalized garden settings, but they can be slower to establish. Once settled, they are long-lived, graceful, and especially useful in woodland borders or more natural planting designs.
Other common lily groups include Trumpet lilies, LA hybrids, OT hybrids, and species lilies. Trumpet lilies are tall, elegant, and often very fragrant, with long trumpet-shaped blooms. LA hybrids, a cross between Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies, combine strong stems and larger flowers with easy garden performance. OT hybrids, often called Orienpet lilies, combine the fragrance and drama of Oriental lilies with the strength and height of Trumpet lilies. Together, these groups give gardeners a wide range of choices, from compact, colourful container lilies to tall, fragrant statement plants for the summer garden.
