Selections For the Discerning Gardener May 2012

Lyles Plant Picks For May 2012

Posted By: in Feature Products

This May I've decided to share a few more of my favourite plant selections for the discerning gardener. These gems add a splash of colour, fragrance or curiosity to your garden. All of these are available at Art's Nursery, although some in limited quantities.

erysimum fragrant star

Erysimum 'Fragrant Star'

Wallflower - A great old-fashioned evergreen perennial that gives year-round appeal. The fragrant flowers begin to bloom in spring and continue into fall.

Wallflowers like full sun to partial shade with excellent drainage and once established are fairly drought tolerant. Prune plants in early spring to maintain a neat compact habit.

'Fragrant Star' forms a nice compact mound of elegant cream and silvery-green foliage that is tinged purple in the winter months. Sweetly fragrant sunshine yellow flowers spring through fall.

Height: 45cm Spread: 60cm Zone: 7

erysimum linifolium sissinghurst variegated

Erysimum linifolium 'Sissinghurst Variegated'

Wallflower - Charming selection with narrow, toothed, cream and green variegated foliage that makes a handsome contrast for the dusky mauve-purple flowers.

Height: 45-60cm Spread: 45cm Zone: 7

hosta first frost

Hosta 'First Frost'

Plantain Lily - Spectacular medium growing sport of 'Halycon' with intense blue-green leaves and a bright yellow margin which turns creamy white by summer.

Plants form a graceful mound and sport tall scapes of light lavender flowers in summer. Leaves have good substance, hold well into fall and are fairly slug resistant. Makes a spectacular container specimen and does well planted en-masse. Full to partial shade in moist, rich soil with adequate drainage.

2010 Hosta of the Year. Height: 45cm Spread: 75cm Zone: 3

epimedium amber queen

Epimedium x 'Amber Queen'

Barrenwort - Exceptional semi-evergreen perennial with arching stems covered with numerous spider-like flowers that begin in April and continue sporadically into fall. Flowers are bright yellow tipped with deep amber. New growth is heavily mottled with bronze-red maturing to dark green. Best grown in partial shade in a rich woodland soil and good drainage. Height: 60cm Spread: 60cm Zone: 5
iris sauveolens var rubromarginata

Iris suaveolens var. rubromarginata

Iris - A dwarf species with short lance-shaped leaves of dark green; semi-evergreen. Flowers open purple with coppery tones and have white and purple (blue) beards. Flowers early spring and sporadically into summer. A very diminutive species that does well in containers, rockeries and in the front of the border. Grow in full sun to light shade, tolerates most soil types but give adequate drainage. Height: 10-15cm Spread: 20cm Zone: 5
