What Is Dormant Oil?

The Dormant Oil spray kit at Art's Nursery is a combination of mineral oil and lime sulfur. These two ingredients are mixed together in your spray kit. It can be used as a target treatment when prevention methods have failed.

What Is Dormant Oil Used For?

Dormant oil is a great product to use if you have pest and disease problems on fruit trees and roses. This combination pesticide and fungicide targets fungus, insects and mites. For example, black spot on roses, scab on apple trees, coddling moths on apple trees, scale, overwintering insects and eggs.

When To Use Dormant Oil?

It can can be sprayed onto dormant fruit trees and roses in the winter time, specifically in January and February.

How Does Dormant Oil Work?

The mineral oil portion acts as a smoother coat for any overwintering insects and their eggs. The lime sulfur is the fungicide and helps to kill and overwintering spores.

Precautions To Consider When Using Dormant Oil:

Dormant Oil should not be used all the time, only when you have a problem. Our native bees such as mason bees also overwinter in the furrows of the fruit trees. Use when needed, sparingly. The best way to prevent pest and disease problems is by removing spent fruit and cleaning leaves around target plants like fruit trees and roses. If you still have a problem Dormant Oil after exhausting all preventive measures, dormant oil is a great product.
