5 Spring Blooming Perennials in April
1. English Primrose
Primroses are among the most popular of spring flowering perennials. Plants grow best in light shade with a rich moist soil. This unique compact selection features golden yellow flowers with an orange red picotee edge above oakleaf-shaped foliage. Excellent for borders, containers and cut flowers. Sure to be a conversation piece!
Bergenias are incredibly hearty and reliably evergreen throughout nearly the entire continent. Plants form a low clump of bold, leathery green leaves, which often turn bronze during winter. This is a new variety of Bergenia from the ShoeshineTM series featuring strong stems of deep rose blooms rising above the glossy dark green foliage in mid spring.
3. Pulmonaria 'Dark Vader' & 'Shrimps on the Barbie'
Dark Vader: Silver spotted leaves all summer and pink to dark blue flowers in very early spring. A fine mildew resistant plant with a super strong habit.
Shrimps on the Barbie: A wow plant. This large, spreading Pulmonaria has an amazing amber of large, deep shrimp pink flowers in the spring. Foliage is green with prominent white spots. Deer and rabbit and mildew resistant.
4. Pasque Flowers
This lovely perennial is not a true crocus, however since it is a close relative of the Prairie Crocus, it often shares its name. Violet-blue cup flowers appear in early spring, before fern like foliage.
5. Prairie Crocus
Clump forming perennial, fern like foliage appears after the nodding, violet-blue, cup shaped flowers. Blooms early spring. Thrives in moist areas of the landscape.
