How To Plant Grow Dahlias, Part 10 Dividing The Tubers

You can divide the tubers in the fall or in the spring. Many growers may prefer to divide in the fall, as divided tubers occupy much less storage space. Tuber eyes, the point where new growth occurs, are much easier to see in the spring. If eyes are difficult to find it is recommended that the old clump be divided in half or in quarters. When tubers are divided from the clump each tuber must have an eye to ensure growth. Do not expect all tubers to have eyes. Select large and healthy appearing tubers to plant. Newly divided tubers should be left to dry for several hours to allow the cut surfaces to heal over. .
